Choosing Aztec Grass vs. Variegated Liriope: A Substitution Guide for Landscape Pros
Variegated Liriope shows up on plant lists constantly — and when availability tightens mid-project, crews need an answer that doesn't stall the install. Aztec Grass is the swap worth knowing: nearly identical from the sidewalk, with the same green-and-white variegated look that reads as a match to the landscape design's intended aesthetic in a finished bed.

Where the two plants differ:
The distinction that matters is site conditions, not appearance. Aztec Grass adapts across a wide range of soil types and conditions, but it's happiest in shaded beds — in full-sun applications, plan on supplemental irrigation to keep it performing. Variegated Liriope is the more sun-flexible of the two.
So the substitution question isn't just "is it available?" — it's "what's the light exposure on this bed?" A shaded understory planting is a confident swap; a full-sun median deserves a harder look at the irrigation plan first.
Spec notes:
Hardiness zones:
Aztec Grass, 7–11; Variegated Liriope, 6–10. Close enough for most Southeast specs, but always confirm on projects near zone edges.
Trade trivia worth repeating on the job:
Despite the name, Aztec Grass has no connection to the Aztec civilization — it's native to Japan and China, and the name is a nursery trade nickname that stuck.
Getting the substitution approved:
At Green Dynamix, we understand plant material substitution is an option and never an automatic swap that works for every landscape's plant list and spec requirements. If the plant list calls for Liriope by name, confirm with the GC or landscape architect before anything goes in the ground — and if a side-by-side comparison sheet or crop photos of the material being loaded onto the truck would help move the approval along in the event a substitution makes sense for the project, our dedicated team can help put one together for your submittal quickly.
These varieties (and thousands more) are available in volume and multiple container sizes, ready to be spec-matched to your plant list requirements across FL, GA & SC.
